Gilford Island is underlain by granitic rocks of the Coast Plutonic Complex.

Bulletin 30, page 46, reports bluish compact stratified clay of Recent glacial or fluvial origin (?) that has a tenacious habit when wet, and is probably suitable for brick and tile.
